Ortho Evra

The Ortho Evra transdermal contraceptive patch, manufactured by Ortho McNeil, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, has been linked to potentially fatal blood clots. Blood clots typically form in the legs and become extremely dangerous when they move to the heart, brain or lungs. Additionally, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolisms (PE) can lead to strokes, heart attacks, hemorrhaging, and death.

Recent analysis of data for "the Patch," as the Ortho Evra transdermal contraceptive patch is known, by the Associated Press and other sources revealed that in 2004, when there were 800,000 women using the Patch, the risk of developing a major blood clot was three times that of oral contraceptive pills. From April 2002 through September 2003, the FDA received 9,116 reports of adverse reactions from the Ortho Evra patch. From May 2002 until May 2003, the FDA received 44 reports of serious clot-related injuries or deaths related to the Patch, compared to only 17 similar reports about Ortho Tri-Cyclen (i.e., "the pill") over the same time period, and with the pill being used by approximately six times as many women.

Ortho Evra
Ortho Evra Health Risks

Ortho Evra is considered a “combination hormonal contraceptive.” The most common injuries associated with the Ortho Evra form of birth control have been blood clots, which can be life-threatening or fatal. In addition to or as a result of blood clots, women using combination hormonal contraceptives have been known to suffer from the following adverse events, which include strokes and heart attacks:
      • Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
      • Thromboembolism and thrombotic disorders (thrombophlebitis, pulmonary embolism, cerebrovascular disorders, and retinal thrombosis)
      • Blood clots
      • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
      • Stroke, including Cerebral Hemorrhage and Cerebral Thrombosis
      • Hepatic neoplasia
      • Gallbladder disease
      • Death
Women who smoke are at greater risk of suffering from these adverse events. Medical conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity and diabetes may also increase the risk of these adverse events.

If you or a loved have suffered any of the risks listed above, these life threatening conditions could be due to the Ortho Evra birth control patch. Contact The Law Firm of Allen L. Rothenberg at
